Day One

June 28, 2011

Post office called first thing this morning to let me know that my chicks were there. They were wanting to make sure someone was home to receive them. I thought that was very nice. As a worried chick mama, I was concerned that the shipping part of their journey would be stressful on them. But I have to admit, the US Postal Service was pretty awesome and I give kudos to my local post office for handling them so well and in a timely manner. My local post office actually had the chicks at my door roughly 45 minutes after calling me.

Once the chicks arrived, I sat down on my couch to open the box and check that all were alive and thriving before going next door to get my nephew, Eli. Since he would be raising two little ones on his own, I wanted to inspect them so that if one didn't make it during shipping, he wouldn't be distraught. Turns out, all five little silkie hens were peeping and full of life.
AHHHH!!! Immediate thoughts were... "OMG!", "Cuteness Overload!", "They're so tiny!", "What have I gotten myself into?".

Instantly, I was partial to the little red/brown girl. I wasn't sure which ones Eli would want, but I knew I wanted her.  So, after taking a few pictures, I walked next door to get him. Ok, so actually I kinda ran cause "OMG! There are chicks in my house!!!"

When Eli heard that they were here, he jumped up excited to meet his new little babies. I honestly think, I could not have a kid turned more like me even if I had spit him out myself. That boy is very much like his Aunt Heather. Anyways, upon seeing them, his immediate thoughts were... "AWWW!", "I want to hold one!", "They're so tiny!", and he even said, "Heather, what have we gotten ourselves into?".  Kid after my own heart I tell ya.

So then the seperating/picking of chicks part was next. I had already set up two brooders with the temps/food/water all ready for this part. A huge part of me really wanted to be selfish and tell him they couldn't be separated, but I had promised him two to take care of and even though I really wanted all the cute fuzziness to myself, I shared.

Eli looked them over and said, "Ok, pick first."
Of course I picked the little red one. Then Eli surprised me. Instead of taking his turn and picking his, he told me to take the black one too. He said he wanted two yellow ones. I was fine with that. So we looked the three remaining yellow ones over and picked the two out that looked the most different so he would be able to tell them apart.  Eli had already picked his names for them out. So it ended up, the yellow one with the darker head was "Peep" and the yellow one with a dark spot on it's tail was "Nugget".
                                                  Peep and Nugget

So I was left with a red one, a black one and a white one. I have not settled on names just yet. I have a lot of good ones picked out, I just can't decide who is who. Here is a picture of my lovely ladies...

Me and Eli spent the whole first day getting to know our new babies. We were surprised at just how friendly/tame they actually were. They didn't dodge our hands when reaching for them nor did they shy away from cuddles. These day old chicks were very docile and sweet. Far from skittish, which is what I expected.

When my husband got home, he instantly fell in love with them too. He became partial to our little black one.  I think I am gonna let him pick out a name for her. She seems to like to cuddle him too. It is very sweet.

Hopefully day two goes as well as day one.  I set Eli's brooder up at his house, by his bed so he can watch them. Mine are set up by my bed also.  Hopefully day two also holds names for my three babies. I'm gonna try really hard to decide on what to call them. I can't keep calling them chickie babies forever. LOL
